Essay #2 ideas

For my second essay I am considering writing an evaluative comparison on the movie Schindler’s List and an essay about the Holocaust.  Both of these deal with the Holocaust, but approach it in different ways.  Essays usually deal more with statistical information than anything else.  This means it will take a logical approach to the issue.  The arguments here are to inform the readers about the injustices done to the Jewish population many years ago.
There is now nothing we can do about what happened, but it is a good way to warn against future instances like this.  Schindler’s list will appeal to me in a more emotional way because they make it very personal.  The whole movie is filmed in black and white except for a red dress that one little girl is wearing.  When you see her at the beginning of the movie you know she will have some significant role.  It is not until the end of the movie that you realize she is one of the dead people on top of a heaping pile of human beings who are being treated like dirt.
Being able to have the two medias appeal in different ways but still show the same argument will help me a lot in this essay.  I have not yet found the written piece that I will be using to write my essay because many of the ones I’ve tried to use are not free.  But, hopefully I will be able to find one with statistical information about the Holocaust and compare that to the movie, which I believe will be the better argument since it hits home with our emotions.

Facebook

Personally, I really like Facebook. It helps me keep in touch with family that I have in New York and even some in California. It also helps me keep in touch with many friends who go to different colleges around the state. The idea of Facebook was a great one. It provides us with networking opportunities, allows us to make a name for ourselves, and keeps us up-to-date.
However, I do think that some of it is getting a little out of hand. I don’t see how Farmville and games like Frontierville fit in with the initial point of the website—social networking. To some people, it may help them pass the time away when boredom strikes. For me, though, the games seem pointless. It is just another way for the Facebook creators to get someone “hooked”, or addicted, to Facebook.
Overall, I believe that the website serves a very useful purpose. I get on it multiple times a day. The concept is very addicting, games or not. It’s exciting to sign on and see that people commented on your wall or your pictures. It allows us to see when people start relationships, what they’ve been up to, what they have planned, how well they are doing, their employment and schooling history, and much more. In the times that we live in today, I couldn’t image growing up in a world with Facebook. Military families keep in touch with members of the family who are deployed overseas. It keeps families together and helps friends stay close. It is our link to everyone.

The Essay I Chose for my First Essay

For my rhetorical analysis of an essay, I am going to read the essay “Study Finds Teenagers’ Internet Socializing Isn’t Such a Bad Thing.” At first, this essay stood out to me just because of the title. We are supposed to pick an essay that has a clear argument and that will be easy to pinpoint exactly what they are trying to say. The title kind of gives away the meaning of the argument in this essay. The only difficulty that may arise while using this essay is that it is not very long. It will take some creative thinking on my part in order to write a long enough paper with an essay that only spans from pages 676-679 in our English book, Everything’s an Argument.

The essay includes many quotes and statistics that should be able to help me analyze how well they are making their argument. At first glance, it appears as if they have done a terrific job at arguing their point. So sure they are with their point of view that they even named the whole essay about it. I also chose this essay because it pertains to me. I am a teenager who uses internet socializing, such as Facebook, on a regular basis. This makes it easy for me to relate to the subject in this piece. The author’s intended reader is probably parents of teens or older adults who don’t actually use these social networks themselves. Since my parents fall into that category, hopefully I will be able to understand the logic behind the intended reader’s thoughts and see if this author does a good job at convincing them otherwise.
